Gift ideas for your favorite 5 and 6 year olds
As our son gets older, he is becoming much more particular in what he wants for the holidays. In this gift guide for kindergarteners, you’ll find some of our favorite toys for little ones ages 5 and 6 years old. These are toys and games our son loves and has on his wish list this year.

Kindergartner Gifts
Stomp Rocket
This simple gift is simply a lot of fun. It really can be used by most ages, but by age 5, they have the weight and strength to launch the rocket to a decent height. And you can purchase additional rockets if all of yours land on the roof.
NERF DinoSquad Rex-Rampage Motorized Dart Blaster
We have officially entered our NERF era in our house. This one is a hit because it’s dinosaurs and NERF.
Coogam Wooden Blocks Brain Teaser Puzzle
This puzzle is great for kindergarteners because it’s a bit more challenging than your average puzzle. It’s basically like Tetris, but a puzzle. You can also use the pieces to make pictures too.
Buffalo Games Pokémon 300 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle
My puzzle-loving kiddo was definitely up for the challenge of this 300 piece jigsaw puzzle. Although he’s not quite ready to knock this one out on his own, the two of us had a good time putting together this puzzle while baby sis took her afternoon nap.
MEGA Pokémon “Pikachu’s Beach Splash” Building Set
My son’s wish list this year is full of MEGA building sets and LEGO sets. He loves Pokémon, so of course, this one made the list!
LEGO Jurassic World T. Rex Dinosaur Fossil Exhibition Building Kit
My son loves of all things LEGO and Jurassic World. There are lots of cool dinosaur-themed kits, including this one.
LEGO Classic Creative Neon Colors Set
One things I noticed when my son moved up to big kid LEGOs is that the sets are made up of mostly specialized pieces – there aren’t a ton of rectangular blocks you can use to create other things. He has a few sets, like this neon one, on his wish list so he can create new things with his LEGO blocks.
Board Games for Kindergarteners
One of my favorite things about this age is that my son loves board games. Here are our favorites for family game night.
Candy Land Board Game
My son’s favorite board game has to be Candy Land. It’s very easy to play with two of you or the whole family. And it’s still as fun as you remember from our childhood.
Ticket to Ride First Journey Board Game
Another board game we love to play as a family is Ticket to Ride First Journey. It’s much more complicated than Candy Land, but it’s not too hard for a 6 year old. We brought this game on our summer vacation and spent hours playing it together.
Yeti In My Spaghetti Game
This game is a bit silly, a lot of fun, and harder than it looks. The concept is similar to Jenga, but with plastic spaghetti and a little Yeti.
UNO Jurassic World Dominion Card Game
I love doing things with my kids that I enjoyed as a child. And I remember spending hours playing UNO with my family when I was little. We picked up this Jurassic World themed UNO game for our son, and he loves it as much as we do.
The Floor is Lava Game
We received “The Floor is Lava!” for my son’s 6th birthday. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to get some energy out on a rainy day.
World of Disney Eye Found It Board Game
I love these “Eye Found It!” cooperative board games – maybe more than my kiddo. In a cooperative board game, you work together to win. The “Eye Found It!” games have an element where you search for different pictures hidden throughout the game board. It’s basically an eye spy picture meets board game.
Peaceable Kingdom Dinosaur Escape Cooperative Game
Cooperative board games are great at this age because it teaches teamwork in a fun way. We love this Dinosaur Escape game. We picked this game up last Black Friday and still play it regularly.
Big Gifts for 5 & 6 Year Olds
MEGA Pokémon “Forest Pokémon Center” Building Set
What I like about building sets is that they came in all sizes and price points. A big set like this MEGA Pokémon “Forest Pokémon Center” Building Set is one of the big gifts on my son’s wish list.
LEGO City Freight Train Set
Not only is this LEGO City Freight Train set cool to build, but it also comes with a remote control for hours more fun of play. Win win.
Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro Tablet
We recently got our son his first tablet on his 6th birthday. He really wanted a tablet where he could play games just like the tablets at the library. The Amazon Fire Kids tablet meets those needs, and we’ve found it easy to set parental restrictions too.
Nintendo Switch
The next BIG electronic item on my son’s wish list is a Nintendo Switch. I don’t know if I am ready for this, but he certainly is!
Thank you for checking out my gift guide for kindergarteners. I hope you are able to find the perfect gift for your five or six year old in this list of toys my son has loves so much.
